Things are getting a bit tight...

and I am not talking about my clothes, although they are too, but more about finances at the moment. I am sure I am not the only one feeling a little bit panicked by the fact today is December 1st and Christmas Day is only 3 weeks away this Friday! I feel as though I still have so much to do and so little money to do it with even though I save with a Christmas Club and have shopping vouchers from Park!
I have found it so difficult to cope with my husband getting paid weekly since he started his contract in July, we just feel as though we are constantly playing catch-up and never getting in front of ourselves. We have one week (1st of the month) when all our direct debits come out, so by the time we have done the food shop that weeks wages have gone. Then we have one week where my husband has to buy his monthly fair, so again another week where we have kissed away £220 before we have eaten! It honestly makes me wonder if it is worth working, I know that sounds awful but when you still feel that you have to watch every penny, it makes you wonder, as I honestly don't feel we are any better off than in the 16 months he was out of work!
I have two daughters learning to drive and saw a lovely little Ford KA yesterday when visiting a friend and it was only £800 and I thought, that is when you know there is a problem when you can't afford to buy it for them, after all £800 is nothing really these days is it? I am sure it will all work out in the end but I have made a consious decision not to do a Sainsburys online shop this week in an effort to save some money and instead will try and live out of the freezer which is quite full but mainly with cheap bread brought up the co-op! I will obviously need some shopping but mainly fresh stuff and sarni fillings along with cereal and some sweet bits for the kids. In an effort to do this I popped into Aldi today for the cereal and fruit and veg. Harvest Mom Coco Pops at only 99p a pack, a very large pack of Brussel Sprouts for 53p, Brocolli for 49p, Grapes for £1.49 a punnet, Bananas at 73p and Pears for 59p a bag and there were 7 fruits in it! Bakewell Tarts at 68p for 6 and a large Rich Tea Biscuit pack for 39p. As I have been buying food for Xmas each week I picked up a really large pack of Shortbread for only £1.79, so was very pleased with my purchases.
Tomorrow it is my intention to pop in to Icelands and pick up Milk and Bread as I don't know anywhere that is cheaper on these two items, a 4 pint carton is only £1 and Kingsmill Bread is always 2 loaves for £1.50. I shall also be popping in to Savers for loo roll as you always get 6 rolls of Kleenex for the same price as 4 in the Supermarkets.
Are you feeling the pinch right now?

S is for friend S and shopping savings (a lesson in how not to shop)

My dear friend S is probably waiting for this post and will be filled with dread when she sees it! S has lived a rather charmed financial life for a few years now, but all that could soon be about to change and she really needs to get things in order now to help secure a brighter financial future for her and her daughter.

Yesterday on our way home from school, she needed to pop into the co-op because she was starving, so me being me, I said make yourself a sandwich when you get in. She said she fancied a croissant or something.
When we got in there, my little one decided he wanted a Duck wrap and a Dr Who magazine and there was no way I was going to pay for that as I had chicken, ham, cheese, bread and bagels in the house. I told him that if he wanted those things he could give me the money back out of his pocket money when we got home and his little Booty came to £4.80.
Meanwhile S is walking around filling up a basket with far more than a couple of croissants! She pointed out that she had bought some snacks, a couple of bags of chipsticks, a couple of bags of quavers and some other stuff. She had already told me that she rarely buys crisps but when she does she likes an assortment. I told her it would be far cheaper to buy multi-packs but still she bought them all loose at probably 40 something pence per bag! As we got to the checkout I saw a pack of 12 Nik Naks for £1.00 and pointed these out to her, so she bought those aswell but still kept the others in the basket. From what I could see, she had also bought a pre-packed sandwich, about 3 different items from the Bakery section, I saw a carton of fresh juice and a physcologies magazine. As she approached the checkout, she asked for my loyalty card, as she doesn't have one, so I picked a leaflet up for her, but she said she has loads of them at home. Her little basket of shopping came to £36 which to me was astonishing! This week I had spent £56 on my weekly shop with Sainsburys online and she had only spent £20 less and had about 10 items if she was lucky!

So the lessons to be learned here are:-

Magazines - If you do have a magazine that you like to buy on a regular basis, then please look at the different subscription deals available, just type the name of the magazine into Google and they will all come up. With S's favourite Pschologies magazine you pay for 6 issues for 6 months by direct debit with www.isubscribe.co.uk you make a massive 69% saving on the cover price of £3.30, so each isssue works out at only £1.00! Plus you recieve a free designer make-up and wash bag set by Allegra Hicks, which would be great for Holiday. Magazine subscriptions also make fantastic gifts and at these crazy prices you won't be going far wrong for a birthday or Christmas pressie. Always tell friends and relatives what you would like to recieve as a gift, as often people are stuck for ideas and would welcome a suggestion from you. My birthday is right near Christmas, but I add things to my list all year and then give the list to my husband about a month beforehand so he can sort out who is buying what. This year I have already written down a jewellery box and some body cream that is £22 which you can only get from Harrods and came highly recommended via another blog, along with some Lime, Basil and Mandarin Cologne by Jo Malone which is £29. Don't forget that with the Sales on, this is a great time to start buying in advance for Xmas to ease the strain nearer the time. Look out for Handbags, purses, cashmere, Nightwear etc

Bakery - If you love the fresh bakery goods available at Supermarkets (and who doesn't?), try to pop in of an evening when items are reduced, buy in bulk and freeze them.

Pre-packed Sandwiches - Avoid them like the Plague! If S had bread indoors and ham or cheese it would have been cheaper to buy one tomato and a lettuce, add some seasoning and mayonnaise and there you have it, a sandwich no different to the one you have bought, but at lots less than the £2.50+ you probably paid in the shop. Even pots of sandwich fillers (although I prefer to make my own) and packets of chicken tikka, work out cheaper than buying a pre-packed sarni and you have enough for the next day awell. The co-op also had a deal on Tuna, 3 tins of John West for only £1.99, mix that with mayo, add some leaves and some cucumber for a tasty lunch. Use the other tins for a pasta dish using ingredients from your storecupboard and you have lunch and dinner sorted for less than £2!

Crisps - Avoid buying loose packets at all costs - this is a completely crazy area to waste money! A loose pack of crisps somewhere in the region of 40p! but at co-op 12 nik naks for £1 - or Walkers crisps in any big supermarket, 24 bags for approx £3.50 - I'll leave you to do the Maths! and if you like Quavers and Chipsticks it will still work out cheaper in the long run to buy two multipacks, even if you don't eat them on a regular basis, products like these do have a long shelf life.

Loyalty Cards - You must have one for every shop you may possibly go in. I don't use Boots very often as Savers is cheaper, but I still have a card which has £11 on it! I will use some of this up when Boots are giving away a make-up voucher which is usually £5 off certain brands.

Local Shops - Do support them, but in the right way. Chains like Co-op and Costcutter do have great deals so keep an eye out for what you need. I mentioned the Tuna and the Nik-Naks above so will be buying them locally and won't then need to order those items on my Sainsburys shop as they are both something I use on a regualar basis.

So if you popped into your local co-op and spent £36 per week, just think what that adds up to over a month and then over a year. Its no good being the kind of person who won't withdraw cash from the ATM at the Post Office because it charges you £1.75 if you are then gonna waste cash in other crazy ways. So if you are popping into the co-op or any other local store for a croissant or two, then just pick up the two croissants and head straight for the checkout. We all deserve a treat sometime!

My friend M, is another culprit. I am always seeing her coming out of the co-op clutching a bottle of squash and a loaf of bread.... what can you do? Doing one large weekly shop and buying enough bread and milk for the week will save loads. As I have mentioned many times before, freeze your bread, it defrosts so quickly, it eliminates waste, especially in the summer months when bread can go mildew quickly. Most supermarkets do 2 loaves for £2 and that would probably be enough for her family of 3 for the week. Semi and Skimmed milk can also be frozen, buy the 6 pint carton, decant half and freeze (allow 24 hours to defrost, less on hot days). Buy squash in 2 litre bottles, works out much cheaper and buy supermarkets own brands, they are no different. Saving money does take time and effort but once you get in the swing of it, it gives you a real thrill to have saved a couple of quid! Turn it into a hobby, keep that spending diary, check those bills to see what you have saved by taking showers instead of baths or by switching lights off when they shouldn't be on anyway! Do you know that a phone charger uses the same amount of electricity if the phone isn't attached? How many of you take the phone off and leave the charger sitting there, switched on at the wall? You will find loads of ways of saving money by looking through the archives of this blog, so come on - start saving!

Days 22 & 23 & co-op deals

I popped into my local co-op today for some chewing gum and ended up spending over £11 on their latest deals and forgot the chewing gum!

They seem to have a range of Mexican foodstuffs on offer and I picked up a Fajitas Kit for £1.54 and a pack of Tortillas for 84p, which is great as I often use these for the kids pack up along with rolls, as sandwiches often become boring and can lead to pack up not getting eaten (I have learnt the hard way). Heinz Tomato Ketchup was also on offer for £1.29 and I picked up some Fruit Shoot drinks 2 packs for £2, Penguins 100% free for £1.36 and a pack of 5 bars of Dairy Milk for 99p. Pilgrims Choice Cheddar was Buy one get one free, so £3 for 2 packs.

I know that if I hadn't have gone in there I wouldn't have spent this money, but it did save a bit on the online shop as drinks, cheese and penguins were all due to be bought.
I also had to go into town today so I treated myself to a coffee whilst I waited for the next bus.

Day 22: Nothing spent today
Day 23: Co-op £11.02, Bus Fare £3.50, Coffee £1.50 Xmas Club £10 High Street Vouchers £4

Free Nails Inc nail polish and Days 18 & 19

So my efforts at being thrifty are often ruined by a glossy mag with a great freebie and that is exactly what happened today. I couldn't resist the June issue of Instyle to get myself a free Nails Inc nail polish worth £10.50. There are 3 colours to choose from, a nude, coral and berry. Why not collect all three? Instyle always was one of my favourite mags and this issue didn't disappoint, jammed full of fashion but also delving into Frugality with a 4 page article entitled "The Thrifty 50, get happy with our 50 under £50 hot list. Summer on a shoestring never looked so chic". Summer on a shoestring to me is getting a really cheap flight to a hot destination, or finding a pair of Louboutins brand new in bag, left on a hot stuffy train by the new owner, not, as in instyle's advice, decking out your patio with DIY bunting made from an old frock, or going to a Luxe restaurant and ordering the cheapest thing on the menu, or how about this one, accessorise your balmain jeans with a Fab, the perfect eighties ice lolly! Well what can I say to all this great thrifty advice? I think Instyle should stick to what it does best and if it wants to delve into money saving advice, get some tips from us Personal Finance bloggers instead of paying fortunes to Freelance writers who don't have a clue on how to save a buck or two!
Day 18: No spending today.
Day 19: £3.50 Instyle magazine.

Days 16 & 17 and sale dress from Whistles.

OK, OK, I am way behind with this daily tracking thing. I just seem to have had a lot on lately. Tuesday (Day 16) was spent at Bluewater looking at Dresses. I decided that I would look around the Department Stores first at labels I wouldn't normally buy, like perhaps, Phase Eight or Fenn Wright & Manson, but before I got to those concessions, I had to stop off at Whistles. I saw a great Whistles dress in my size and in the sale, so got the assistant to hold it for me whilst I continued my search. Nothing really struck me at the end of my rounds and I debated whether to go to John Lewis and maybe Jigsaw but went back to try on the Whistles dress. It looked far better than expected, covered in multi coloured flowers, therefore any colour shoes will match from pink to yellow to electric blue and emerald green. The picture is rubbish and it is far nicer on, a lovely silky material and fully lined and when you are looking at cost per wear, as we do in a recession, at only £80 it will do for my daughters 18th party, would be fine for holiday evenings and any time I might go out for a meal. The silly shop assistant took off the label, so I can't remember the original price so if you have seen it and know, please tell me, I think it may have been £120.

Day 16
Daily Tracking: Sushi & Coffee: £4.65. Chewing Gum: 50p.
Day 17
Daily Tracking: Loo Roll in Savers: £1.89. Train Fare for my daughter: £2.00.
Free Stuff: Got another Loreal Professionel Conditioner on a voucher, as my daughter had her hair done on Saturday and I forgot to get her to pick one up.

My first award and Days 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15

Firstly, my apologises for my blogging absence. I feel so guilty, but was really busy with work Thurs/Fri and Sat and then went on a Spa weekend Hen Night so am only just beginning to feel human again and finally getting the house back in some sort of order. Normal service will be resumed ASAP, well maybe not, as am off to Bluewater tomorrow to look for a dress for the up and coming wedding but I will be on the hunt for a bargain - you can be sure of that!

I gratefully accept my first blogging award from the fantastic Cassie over at Jacob Wrestling. Although I read lots of PF blogs, my blogging tastes are like my taste in music (a soul girl at heart, who also loves rock n'roll, jazz, country etc) so I don't just limit myself to reading the genre that my blog falls into. I love reading Cassie's blog she is one fab Momma, who constantly has me in hysterics with her wit and writing skill. Thanks Cassie!

Anyway part of this award is to nominate 5 other blogs who I think are fantastic and I would like to nominate:-
1. Nixdminx - A fab Mummy blogger, lone parent to miniminx with a wardrobe to die for!
2. Shoestringalley - Shoestrings account of her daily tracking was what inspired me to do the same! I get the hump if she hasn't posted each night before I go to bed!
3. Yummy Mummys Beauty Blog - Another single Mum, but one totally obsessed with Make-up, it is great to find out about products that someone else has tested out first, also I loved her recent outfit post, those KG shoes were to die for!
4. Obsessional Confessional - a recent find but a girl after my own heart in many ways! Follow her foray into Fashion.
5. Pochyemu over at Its mostly about me, meet this young American trying to juggle life as a wife and student in this country, swears a lot - v.funny.

Once you have received your award - this is what you have to do:-

1. You have to pass it on to 5 other fabulous blogs in a post.

2. You have to list 5 of your fabulous addictions in the post.

3. You must copy and paste the rules and the instructions below in the post.

Instructions: On your post of receiving this award, make sure you include the person that gave you the award and link it back to them. When you post your five winners, make sure you link them as well. To add the award to your post, simply right-click, save image, then “add image” it in your post as a picture so your winners can save it as well. To add it to your sidebar, add the “picture” widget. Also, don’t forget to let your winners know they won an award from you by emailing them or leaving a comment on their blog.

Day Nine

I told you it would be a really bad day today, I had a hair appointment, birthday cards and present to buy - grrr...

The Co-op has some really good deals on at the moment so I got a bit carried away with special offers and reduced items. Spagetti 42p, Pasta 59p, Fruit & Fibre £.24, Utterly Butterly BOGOF etc etc, oh and treated myself to some flowers reduced to £2.50!
Had to go into town for hair appointment and popped in to Savers to stock up on that Arrid deodorant for 49p.

Day Six and Savers Haul

You guys know that I am always singing the praises of Savers and whilst in town today I popped in for loo roll (as I have said before they sell Kleenex and always in a 6 roll pack, so you get 2 extra rolls and they are still cheaper than any supermarket), and I also needed Deodorant and Face Cleansing Wipes. I usually buy the pink imperial leather one for 78p but was even more pleased to see Arrid for only 49p! - what a complete bargain and even the mens one was 49p, so I will be buying that for Hubby in future! I always keep a stock of Deo as the girls spray it around as if it were bloody air freshner, so was well chuffed with this. You can also get Face Wipes for 69p and to top it all, I had 2 Kleenex loo roll money off coupons come through the door, so I saved 50p there as well!

Daily Tracking: Bus Fare £3.50, Savers £2.57 (can you believe that, only £2.57 for loo roll, face wipes and deodorant! just goes to show how useful money off coupons are, especially when you manage to redeem them in a cheap shop!).

Day Five of Daily Tracking

Sorry for the lack of posts regarding any money saving issues. I have had a lot on this week, including some work, so really haven't had time to keep up with things.

No time for decluttering or getting the house in order either but at least today I didn't spend any money!

Daily Tracking: Nothing spent today!

Day Four of Daily Tracking

Can't believe I am actually managing to post at night for the correct day rather than doing it the next day, which kinda makes me a day behind.

Daily Tracking: £20 printers for party invitations for my daughters 18th (don't even go there, this will get a post of its own one day), £5 for a school event this evening for one of my daughters to go to.

This is a bad week, usually I go for days without spending a penny (not literally!)and next week looks pretty dismal too, as I have three birthdays!

Lots of offers in Boots on Make-up and Day three of Daily Tracking

I realised today that I have quite a lot of Birthdays coming up over the next few weeks, so am not very happy about how much money I need to spend out on this, but what can you do?

I did at least manage to buy a Birthday gift from Boots which means I recieved a £5 skincare voucher which I will redeem against a cleanser some time soon, as the Chantecaille is running low and is way above my current budget, so maybe No.7 for me this time.

Boots seem to have lots of offers on make-up at the moment. I saw Boots 17, spend £10 and you get a free gift box containing lipgloss, nail polish and an eye dazzle and some other brand, The Collection, (I think thats what it was called) had a 3 for 2 with some lovely summer shades for lips and nails. So for anyone who buys these brands, it is worth a look and don't forget to use your Boots Loyalty Card, if you haven't already got one, then apply now, as Boots is a company that gives away more points per pound than other retailers.

Daily Tracking: £10.06 on Birtday Gift, £1.99 on Card and Chewing Gum, 82p on a hot sausage roll ( I don't make a regular habit of this but had left my lunch at home).

Stuff with food: Homemade Chicken and Leek Pie. No leftovers for freezer as had daughter and boyfriend for supper.

Decluttering/Daily Challenge: Sorted out my handbag (more like a holdall) and collected up all the loose receipts and money off coupons lurking in the bottom.

Free Stuff: Reused a Gift bag for the Birthday Gift as I keep all the good ones, or ones where nobody has written on the tag.

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

Day Two - Daily Tracking

Tuesday is the day I go to the cash point and withdraw my weekly allowance and sort out what needs to be paid. I have stuck with this day for years as I used to go Supermarket shopping on Wednesdays, so it made sense to get everything sorted the day before. So there will always be more spent on a Tuesday than any other day.

Daily Tracking: £66.47 on Sainsburys Online Shopping, £10 pocket money, £10 Xmas club, £4 High Street Christmas Vouchers .

Stuff with food: Homemade Lasange.

Leftovers: A small lasange given away to in-laws and 2 portions for the freezer.

Decluttering/Daily Challenge: Sorted out my sons drawers and wardrobe. Put some clothes for charity bag and the decent stuff for eBay (although I can't sell at present due to loss of camera software to upload onto new computer).

Free Stuff: 4 magazines from my mum.

Lovely Stuff: One of my daughters had 2 parcels arrive today, a gorgeous dress from ebay which was £90 on Asos, for only £7.50 in worn once immaculate condition, from a brand called Tofu, which is not that well known so I guess that is why it didn't get bid up higher and a pair of sandals that are currently £55 on the brands website, for £14.

Tofu dress, £7.50 on ebay - god I love a bargain!

Daily Tracking - Day One

Yesterday was supposed to be my first day of online daily tracking but due to one broken laptop in the house and a fight for the main computer with one child studying for A-Levels and one for GCSE’s, followed by the first episode of Ashes to Ashes, it didn’t get done.

It feels strange how, once you adopt a thrifty living lifestyle, that the need to simplify other areas of your life by decluttering and doing crazy things like saving elastic bands and paper clips, just seems to follow suit. Now don’t get me wrong I will always want and one day will have, a Chanel 2.55 bag, I will always want new clothes and will continue to dribble at newsstands each month when the new edition of Vogue comes out, it is just in my Genetic make-up, but have felt lately, a real need to simplify other areas of my life and home.

Hopefully by getting more personal and sharing my daily expenditure with you all, it will add a new dimension to the Blog, although I will continue to bombard you with special offers and discount codes as I find them.

So, Day One was Monday 20th April

Daily Tracking: £6.47 to send a parcel Special Delivery.

Stuff with Food: Cooked two chickens, one for todays roast dinner (I always do my roast on Mondays as my Mum comes for supper) and one in the fridge for Wednesdays chicken and leek pie.

Leftovers: My mum took a dinner home and my mother in law came up to collect one for her supper. Made a chicken stock from the carcass to make a gravy to go in Wednesdays pie.

Decluttering: Didn’t achieve anything today, had visitors in the morning, did a massive pile of ironing after lunch, went to the Post Office, then had my mum to visit.

Stuff that needed doing: Returned grey dress and sent parcel.

Spending Diary - Daily Tracking and Expenditure

For anyone who hasn't yet started one, get more info on keeping a spending diary here.
