Day Ten

Daily Tracking: Nothing spent today.
Free Stuff: Hubby had a free hair cut! On the back of my salon visit yesterday I was asked if I knew a man who wanted to be a male model for one of the trainees.
Decluttering: Not getting as much done as I hoped due to lack of time and work etc - will I ever get this house sorted?

Hayfever on a Budget

I talked a while ago about buying generic medication instead of branded and the huge savings you can make by doing so here, but with the Hayfever season upon us, I felt it was time for an update.

Boots along with all the major supermarkets sell their own brand of Hayfever medication which contain exactly the same ingredients as their branded counterparts, with Asda coming out cheapest at only 58p for its Zirtek equivalent.

It can be very difficult for young children who suffer as my youngest child does, but after seeing on GMTV a few weeks back, Dr Hilary's great trick of smearing vaseline around the inside of each nostril, helps to prevent the pollen from going up your nose and gives some relief to small children who may be made to eat on the field at lunchtime etc

In the height of summer when my son is at his worse, I do still use the tumble dryer for his clothes and bedding so that his stuff doesn't get covered in pollen whilst hanging out on the washing line, thus causing him further irritation. I also try to keep windows closed as much as possible.

If a young child does need to take a anti-histamine syrup, make sure you get a prescription from the Doctor rather than paying out over the counter costs. When my child came down with hayfever for the first time, 2 years ago, there was no time to wait for perscriptions, so if you do need to rush to the chemist, then Zirtek Syrup (75ml) £2.88 at Superdrug, is about the cheapest available at present.

Only one day left on the Outnet flash sale - spring dresses

Only one day left on theoutnet spring dresses flash sale. You need to sign in to access, so register now if you haven't already done so.
I am loving this Vanessa Bruno silk dress with 60% off, now only £112. It fits in well with this seasons trend for Bright colours, would be great for a wedding, the races etc but is also a good investment piece which will never date and as we all know girls, dressing in a recession is all about buying quality wardrobe staples which you can pull out year after year.

Free Skype Calls from 3 Mobile

During the summer, 3 mobile will expand its service to make it possible for anyone with a compatible 3G phone to take advantage of free Skype calls, whether or not their phone is from 3. In future you will be able to buy a 3 sim for unlimited Skype-to-Skype calls for less than the price of a cup of coffee and talk for as much as you want without ever paying another penny.

Day Six and Savers Haul

You guys know that I am always singing the praises of Savers and whilst in town today I popped in for loo roll (as I have said before they sell Kleenex and always in a 6 roll pack, so you get 2 extra rolls and they are still cheaper than any supermarket), and I also needed Deodorant and Face Cleansing Wipes. I usually buy the pink imperial leather one for 78p but was even more pleased to see Arrid for only 49p! - what a complete bargain and even the mens one was 49p, so I will be buying that for Hubby in future! I always keep a stock of Deo as the girls spray it around as if it were bloody air freshner, so was well chuffed with this. You can also get Face Wipes for 69p and to top it all, I had 2 Kleenex loo roll money off coupons come through the door, so I saved 50p there as well!

Daily Tracking: Bus Fare £3.50, Savers £2.57 (can you believe that, only £2.57 for loo roll, face wipes and deodorant! just goes to show how useful money off coupons are, especially when you manage to redeem them in a cheap shop!).

Day Five of Daily Tracking

Sorry for the lack of posts regarding any money saving issues. I have had a lot on this week, including some work, so really haven't had time to keep up with things.

No time for decluttering or getting the house in order either but at least today I didn't spend any money!

Daily Tracking: Nothing spent today!

Day Four of Daily Tracking

Can't believe I am actually managing to post at night for the correct day rather than doing it the next day, which kinda makes me a day behind.

Daily Tracking: £20 printers for party invitations for my daughters 18th (don't even go there, this will get a post of its own one day), £5 for a school event this evening for one of my daughters to go to.

This is a bad week, usually I go for days without spending a penny (not literally!)and next week looks pretty dismal too, as I have three birthdays!

Dont forget to check your Sainsburys Active Kids Vouchers and my free £10!

For anyone who doesn't already know this and shops at Sainsburys, you can check the codes online that are on each of your active kids vouchers to see if you have won £50 worth of Groceries. If you are a winner they send you a code to use online through the post or a voucher to use in-store, the choice is yours. The good news is, I have won £50! so can use next weeks shopping budget towards a bill or something.

When my shopping arrived from Sainsburys on Tuesday evening, the driver was 10 minutes late and gave me a £10 money off voucher! so I am doing really well! Glad I gave up going to Tesco for the weekly shop, I have never had it so good!

Lots of offers in Boots on Make-up and Day three of Daily Tracking

I realised today that I have quite a lot of Birthdays coming up over the next few weeks, so am not very happy about how much money I need to spend out on this, but what can you do?

I did at least manage to buy a Birthday gift from Boots which means I recieved a £5 skincare voucher which I will redeem against a cleanser some time soon, as the Chantecaille is running low and is way above my current budget, so maybe No.7 for me this time.

Boots seem to have lots of offers on make-up at the moment. I saw Boots 17, spend £10 and you get a free gift box containing lipgloss, nail polish and an eye dazzle and some other brand, The Collection, (I think thats what it was called) had a 3 for 2 with some lovely summer shades for lips and nails. So for anyone who buys these brands, it is worth a look and don't forget to use your Boots Loyalty Card, if you haven't already got one, then apply now, as Boots is a company that gives away more points per pound than other retailers.

Daily Tracking: £10.06 on Birtday Gift, £1.99 on Card and Chewing Gum, 82p on a hot sausage roll ( I don't make a regular habit of this but had left my lunch at home).

Stuff with food: Homemade Chicken and Leek Pie. No leftovers for freezer as had daughter and boyfriend for supper.

Decluttering/Daily Challenge: Sorted out my handbag (more like a holdall) and collected up all the loose receipts and money off coupons lurking in the bottom.

Free Stuff: Reused a Gift bag for the Birthday Gift as I keep all the good ones, or ones where nobody has written on the tag.

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

Day Two - Daily Tracking

Tuesday is the day I go to the cash point and withdraw my weekly allowance and sort out what needs to be paid. I have stuck with this day for years as I used to go Supermarket shopping on Wednesdays, so it made sense to get everything sorted the day before. So there will always be more spent on a Tuesday than any other day.

Daily Tracking: £66.47 on Sainsburys Online Shopping, £10 pocket money, £10 Xmas club, £4 High Street Christmas Vouchers .

Stuff with food: Homemade Lasange.

Leftovers: A small lasange given away to in-laws and 2 portions for the freezer.

Decluttering/Daily Challenge: Sorted out my sons drawers and wardrobe. Put some clothes for charity bag and the decent stuff for eBay (although I can't sell at present due to loss of camera software to upload onto new computer).

Free Stuff: 4 magazines from my mum.

Lovely Stuff: One of my daughters had 2 parcels arrive today, a gorgeous dress from ebay which was £90 on Asos, for only £7.50 in worn once immaculate condition, from a brand called Tofu, which is not that well known so I guess that is why it didn't get bid up higher and a pair of sandals that are currently £55 on the brands website, for £14.

Tofu dress, £7.50 on ebay - god I love a bargain!

Buy one, get one half price on O Beach swimwear

Don't leave it till the last minute to stock up on your holiday swimwear, checkout the great offer on O Beach swimwear here.

Daily Tracking - Day One

Yesterday was supposed to be my first day of online daily tracking but due to one broken laptop in the house and a fight for the main computer with one child studying for A-Levels and one for GCSE’s, followed by the first episode of Ashes to Ashes, it didn’t get done.

It feels strange how, once you adopt a thrifty living lifestyle, that the need to simplify other areas of your life by decluttering and doing crazy things like saving elastic bands and paper clips, just seems to follow suit. Now don’t get me wrong I will always want and one day will have, a Chanel 2.55 bag, I will always want new clothes and will continue to dribble at newsstands each month when the new edition of Vogue comes out, it is just in my Genetic make-up, but have felt lately, a real need to simplify other areas of my life and home.

Hopefully by getting more personal and sharing my daily expenditure with you all, it will add a new dimension to the Blog, although I will continue to bombard you with special offers and discount codes as I find them.

So, Day One was Monday 20th April

Daily Tracking: £6.47 to send a parcel Special Delivery.

Stuff with Food: Cooked two chickens, one for todays roast dinner (I always do my roast on Mondays as my Mum comes for supper) and one in the fridge for Wednesdays chicken and leek pie.

Leftovers: My mum took a dinner home and my mother in law came up to collect one for her supper. Made a chicken stock from the carcass to make a gravy to go in Wednesdays pie.

Decluttering: Didn’t achieve anything today, had visitors in the morning, did a massive pile of ironing after lunch, went to the Post Office, then had my mum to visit.

Stuff that needed doing: Returned grey dress and sent parcel.

Sincere Apologises to Hobbs - oops!

Oh dear, I feel such an idiot!
I rang Hobbs this morning and explained about the missing t-shirt. The very nice man on the end of the phone at customer service advised me that an email had been sent, telling me that the yellow t-shirt was in fact, out of stock. I muttered my apologises about not reading my emails properly and promptly hung up whilst I logged on to read my spam.
OK so I am a fool, but why did the item not say "out of stock" when I put it in the shopping basket? lots of other things came up with an "out of stock" message so why not that? and, and why was there no message on the dispatch note?
So you see it is still their fault, sort of, but thought I had better admit to you all what happened before my comments caused the downfall of yet another High Street Store and Hobbs fell off your shopping radar. So apologises Hobbs and I may even shop with you again when you reduce that gorgeous black and white £199 dress!

Easter Shopping Frenzy that all went wrong!

My little Easter clothes shopping frenzy turned into a bit of a nightmare. The grey dress that I thought would be so figure flattering and an ideal wardrobe staple, in fact looked bloody awful on. I was so disappointed but hey ho, that will be returned to HOF pronto today.

The Hobbs delivery filled me with angst, as, upon opening the lovely box which was supposed to hold 2 basic summer t-shirts, it in fact only contained one! Yes guys, can you seriously believe it, only the white top was enclosed. I scrutinised the enclosed invoice, looking for a message saying that the yellow T, was on its way, but it had the yellow one written on it, as if it was in the parcel! The package arrived late on Friday (Couriers at 6.20pm?) and I didn’t actually open it until Saturday evening. I have never bought from Hobbs before, either online or instore and as you can well imagine, this experience has put me off for life! OK so the top was only £9 but that really is not the point, it could have been a £199 dress. Will they believe me when I ring them today? Only time will tell and I will let you know later, how I get on. I am seriously worried that in a few weeks when summer really has arrived and I wear my yellow patent Lanvin pumps that have hardly seen the light of day as they don‘t go with anything in my wardrobe, that my husband will say “where is the yellow top you bought to go with those shoes?” you see I can’t bring myself to tell him yet! Oh and the good news on the pumps is that Lanvin have done yellow again and they are currently on the Matches website for £278! Thank God I never sold them on Ebay which is where loads of my stuff went in an effort to raise money and declutter. So many things I got rid of last year, now sit in the "regret" portion of my brain but I guess Bills and School fees were more important than Missoni cardigans and Jimmy Choos, weren’t they?

Anyway back to dresses for the wedding, I was trying to think of websites that I hadn’t yet checked out and realised that even though I have a link on this blog and that they currently have 11% off, plus free delivery and free returns, that I hadn’t yet looked at Boden. I saw this gorgeous dress which is only £57.85 with discount deducted and I am totally loving the rose clutch bag. The dress is not the right style for my figure (unless I don’t eat anything for the next 6 weeks) but thought I should share it with you incase anyone else is looking for something special for a wedding, the races etc.
Happy Shopping!

Making Use of Leftovers - Banana Cake

We have had a bit of leftover fruit this week, with the kids being off, so Little Man and I have been baking. I got this receipe from the internet an age ago, it is so simple to make (I don't even use scales, just guess work with weights) and very tasty! Ideal for using up bananas that have gone black. Great for pack lunches, picnics or with a cup of tea on a Sunday afternoon, I really must go and put the kettle on!

4oz butter or margarine
6oz sugar
8oz self raising flour
2 eggs
2 large or 3 medium, very ripe bananas

Heat the oven to gas mark 4; 180C
Grease a 2lb loaf tin.
Mash the bananas with a sturdy fork.
Cream the butter and sugar together and mix in the eggs
Mix together the two yellow sludges you now have.
Mix in the flour.
Scrape into the loaf tin and bake for 40 minutes then lower teh temperature to gas mark 2; 150C and cook for a further 30 minutes.

Try to let it cool (turned out on a rack) before you devour it.

An Easter spend up on wardrobe staples for a Recessionista!

I was reading over at Frugal Trenches about how the author of that Blog hasn't bought herself anything for a whole year, since she started the Blog and the thought of being in a similar situation made me feel utterly depressed. I haven't had anything new all winter apart from some Uggs which were a birthday present and to be honest it is really getting me down. I had a trip to Bluewater last July where I bought a pair of seven for all mankind jeans in the Joseph sale but that is a distant memory now. I have still been searching online for a dress for the wedding I have coming up at the end of May, I never made a definite decision on the M&S one I showed you previously, then the Wallis one I had seen in a mag, did appear online, but still I couldn't make a decision. I must have trawled every website known to man (or woman) this weekend and eventually found a lovely one on the Hobbs website and it was in the Sale, but alas not in my size.

Hobbs is not usually a shop I go into to, I feel it is all a bit officey and old and expensive! but hey I am over 40 so perhaps I should be shopping in places like this and John Lewis instead of dribbling over "See by Chloe" dresses on Net-a-porter which would be far too short for me and I wouldn't wear anyway! You see I am a bit funny about length on ladies over a certain age. I saw an aquaintance in town last week, she is about 40, but quite weather beaten of face, although she was attractive when younger, anyway, she was pushing a buggy as she has a toddler as well as older children, and she had a mini skirt on which was about the length my girls would wear! Although she was also sporting "opaques", I was horrified to say the least! Just on the knee is the limit for me, over forties in Minis's brings the words "mutton" and "lamb" to mind, no matter how slim you are - avoid like the plague otherwise everyone will just think you are trying to look younger, but every face will tell a story!

So back to the dress search. As the Hobbs dress was a no no, I checked out some other bits on the site and just couldn't resist a couple of items in the Sale, just plain summer tops, but much needed summer essentials to fill gaps in my capsule wardrobe (a capsule wardrobe so small at present, it should read "cup"sule - as that is what it would probably all fit into!) No seriously, luckily I do seem to have more summer clothes than winter, but do like to replace t-shirts each season if possible, as nothing looks worse than a white t-shirt that is off colour or a black one with wash fade! Gap and M&S are usually best for these basic items and they see you through summer and winter as they can be used for layering in colder weather.

So this was the first top, a bit more than a plain t-shirt with a draping Grecian feature which will disguise a tummy nicely. I am planning on wearing this with jeans of course, sandals and a nice long necklace and sunnies. Was £39.00 now £25.

Now you may think yellow is a funny colour, but I have my eye on some yellow shoes and if that doesn't come off, I love yellow with blue anyway and at only £9 down from £19, it won't be too much of a dissapointment if it ends up going under a jumper!

Now my next purchase is a dress from House of Fraser, not to wear to the wedding but purely as a wardrobe staple. Most women have or should have, a little black dress lurking in their closet, but I don't (well I do really, it is from Karen Millen, is 8 years old and no longer fits!), so opted for a grey one instead! This can be worn for the Hen Night evening when we have dinner. The problem for me is because I don't go out much I never have anything to wear when I do! Sometimes us Mums from school go out for a meal, or I go with the girls from work, so this would be ideal for those occassions and at £29.50 down from £59, it is a steal! It has all the elements I am looking for in a dress, short sleeves to cover "Bingo Wings" and gathers over tummy area to disguise lumps and bumps. It also covers this seasons draping trend which can be found everywhere at the moment. Not everyone goes for draping jersey type fabrics but I find them flattering.

And just for the hell of it I am going to show you the dress I really want which is in the sale at £69, so if anyone sees this at their local Hobbs, can you email me please?

Although I wanted to steer away from monochrome and get a dress that was brightly coloured, I couldn't help but fall in love with this one, again from Hobbs, but not in the sale, so the princely sum of £199 would be required to purchase this little beauty. I am loving the shape and don't forget it would be much longer on me than the model, but I would need a little black cardi or shrug to accomodate the "Russian Shot Putters" arms, oh well I can dream.... but if you want to check out the sale at www.hobbs.co.uk, there is up to 50% off certain lines.

So I have had a bit of an Easter spend up and yes I do feel guilty, which was why I did the dirty deed of online shopping, whilst my husband was still in bed, but I am consoling myself that in my spending diary where I am totalling up what I have saved this year by taking advantage of sales, discount codes, cashback sites etc, I can write for todays entry that I have saved a total of £54! So whether we are fat or thin, rich or poor, on a budget or just have a husband who is as tight as a@@@holes, we are girls and we need clothes - FACT.

Designer Sunglasses at £59 & Premium denim from £62 DVB Victoria Beckham range

Another great find has been secretsales.com. It is free to sign up which gives you exclusive access to online designer sales.

Two of my current favourites are Victoria Beckhams DVB range of denim, with jeans from as little as £62, followed closely by her sunglasses range with loads of styles, everything from aviators to large black "Jackie O" styles, with all pairs at a set price of £59! an absolute steal for the summer, you can just add another pair to your collection at that price, as there are loads of different coloured frames and lenses. Don't forget, last year her sunnies were seen on all her A List Hollywood friends including, Katie Holmes, Eva Longoria and J Lo, so if they are good enough for them, they are good enough for me!

I am also loving the Pilgrim Jewellery sale, where pretty Rings, which would make fab gifts, are only £6! and there are bangles and necklaces to match.

You can sign up for reminders to make sure you don't miss anything here.

Vodafone is offering bonus ‘Freedom Packs’ of free text messages and voice minutes to pay as you go (PAYG) customers who top up £10, £15 or £20.

What will happen to Recessionista's?

Experts believe that we should be getting out of the Recession by the end of the year, which got me thinking, what will happen to Recessionista's? Will Recessionista's revert back to being Fashionista's? What will be the point of Blogs such as mine?

Well guys I won't be giving up! Even though the research for this Blog takes up massive amounts of my time, I find it far too much fun than to just give it up when we hit the good times again. Lets face it, there will always be Students, Single Parents on benefits or just one income, or someone out of work, who wants to save a few quid and will be grateful of being pointed in the right direction to get a bargain or discount. We all need clothes, food, heat and water but are learning how to have these essential things as cheaply as possible.

As for the rest of us, my hope for the future is that the thrifty lifestyle we have adopted over the last year will stand us in good stead for the future. I will certainly squirrel away the cash for luxury purchases that I wouldn't be able to do if all the lights were constantly on in my house, or I was too lazy to walk to the washing line and instead stuck everything in the dryer. I think a thrifty way of living which originally started out of neccessity, has now become a way of life for me and I can only see benefits for the future from this.

There is nothing wrong with the "voucher culture" society we have become, afer all, what is the point of discount codes and cashback websites giving us something for nothing if we don't take advantage of it?

A few years ago we were bragging about how much we paid for a pair of Chanel pumps but now Fashionista's are bragging about how much they saved by grabbing a pair on Ebay! Which goes to show how much fun bargain hunting, clothes swapping etc can be!

Becoming a savvy sales shopper, eliminating debt and food waste, taking care of our water consumption and switching our utility suppliers can all bring about massive savings over time - you'd be a fool not to take advantage of it!
